Additional training in trauma and acute care surgery

Trauma and acute care surgery is a subspecialization of general surgery. Managing patients with major multiple injuries requires specific skills that are more specialized than those required or seen in the basic five-year training in general surgery.

Scientific knowledge and technical approaches in this field are constantly evolving, which requires more advanced knowledge and technical skills. Exposure to a vast range of clinical cases is essential. The professional development program in trauma and acute care surgery (graduate degree) is designed to provide a structured educational experience in all aspects of emergency surgery. This training covers cutting-edge medical and surgical care for trauma patients and emergency surgical conditions.

Université de Montréal and the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal have partnered to provide a program that seeks to foster, support and promote the acquisition and development of specialized fundamental, clinical and therapeutic knowledge in the field of trauma and acute care surgery. The program also seeks to promote education, prevention and dissemination of clinical knowledge, while stimulating clinical and/or fundamental research. At the end of the training, participants will have acquired the technical knowledge, competencies, skills and attitudes necessary to practise as specialists in trauma and acute care surgery. They will have the training necessary to be affiliated with an academic and university centre and to conduct research as a leader in the field.

This is a 12-month training program in trauma and acute care surgery with an optional additional year in professional development in research.
